Fast and free tax preparation and filing is being offered to households making less than $50,000 by United Way and local partners. The free service aims to help Central Kentuckians claim overlooked tax credits and receive the tax returns they have earned. There is a particular emphasis on the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and on quick returns.
In an effort to help families claim all entitled tax credits and keep the money in the Bluegrass, trained volunteers certified by the IRS will staff sites across Central Kentucky for free tax preparation. These volunteers will help households receive 100% of their tax return, most in less than 10 days.
Every year, Kentuckians miss out on tax credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), a credit created to support working families. Tax credits like this one are overlooked by thousands of families because people either don’t know that they exist or don’t know that they are eligible. The IRS estimates that as many as 25% of eligible workers are missing out on the EITC alone, worth up to $5,600 for each return that qualifies. Last year’s EITC distributions lifted an estimated 6.6 million people out of poverty. Half of those assisted were children.
Last year, the partnership of local agencies completed returns for more than 2,500 families. Central Kentucky households that participated in this free tax service received a total of $1.9 million in EITC returns and a total of $5.32 million in all returns. These dollars stay in the hands that earned them, are spent locally and go back into the local economy.
Appointments and inquiries can be made by dialing 2-1-1.
This free tax preparation service is made possible through a coalition of local nonprofit organizations.
