Want to be awesome? Be a mentor!

You are here

January is National Mentoring Month, and we can't think of a better way to kick off the year than by celebrating the men and women who make a difference in the lives of others. We can have mentors during many stages of our lives, but arguably, having a mentor as a child is most important.
According to Mentor, The National Mentoring Partnership, those who are considered at-risk children but had a mentor are:

    55% more likely to enroll in college;
    78% more likely to volunteer regularly;
    130% more likely to hold leadership positions;
    Interested in becoming a mentor (90%).

We don't know about you, but those sound like some pretty incredible statistics to us! If you're looking to make a difference in the lives of others by becoming a mentor, here are some opportunities that may be right up your alley:

  • Volunteer Impact Partnership (VIP): VIP is a partnership between UWBG, area school districts and our community. The goal of VIP is to provide a consistent, stable relationship with a child or group of children in order to help them advance academically. We match a student with a tutor/mentor who will agree to meet with the student for one hour or more each week throughout the school year. Want to get involved? Click here for more information.
  • RSVP Trailblazers: This program is part of a national initiative that provides volunteer opportunities to people 55 and over who want to remain actively involved in the life of their community. RSVP Trailblazers’ specific goal is to focus volunteer talents on greater academic success by tutoring, mentoring and sharing life experiences with our youth and adults. RSVP Trailblazers currently operates in Anderson, Clark, Scott and Woodford Counties. Ready to mentor? Click here for more information.
  • Agency Partners: If you are looking for other mentoring opportunities, one of the UWBG partner agencies may be the perfect fit. A complete list of our partner agencies can be found here, or you can call 2-1-1 to learn more about volunteer opportunities in your area.

Our community, especially the children in our community, need our help! Let's help make a difference in their lives by becoming a mentor. It Matters!
