Countdown to Kindergarten Gearing Up to Launch Its Third Year
Lexington, KY – May 15, 2013 -  Kindergarten students entering Fayette County Public Schools this August can look forward to a variety of fun, free and educational activities this summer through the Countdown to Kindergarten program.
Community organizations have partnered to offer free and low-cost activities for registered kindergartners and their families.  Countdown to Kindergarten is financially supported by PNC Foundation in conjunction with Fayette County Public Schools, Childcare Council of Kentucky and United Way of the Bluegrass. “PNC values its partnerships with community based nonprofit organizations which provide enhanced educational opportunities for children and families. Countdown to Kindergarten is a perfect example of a program that prepares the children of our community for success in school and life,” said John Gohmann, PNC Regional President.
Countdown to Kindergarten kicks off on Saturday, June 8 and activities will be offered weekly leading up to the first day of school. Registered kindergartners and their families are invited to participate in a variety of events designed to help new students gear up for the first day of school and head down the right path of learning.  “Getting the right start in school can lead to a lifetime of academic success for a child,” said Fayette County Public Schools Superintendent, Tom Shelton. “I have never seen so many community partners come together to make a difference for our littlest learners. This program is one of a kind and shows the commitment we have here in Lexington to do everything we can to help all kids. It’s a joy to see community engagement at this level.”
Early childhood education is an important cause for our community.  Countdown to Kindergarten promotes the lifelong value and importance of education by engaging children in a variety of fun and interactive activities. Bill Farmer, President and CEO of United Way of the Bluegrass said, “Quality, early childhood education is the foundation for individual and community success. United Way of the Bluegrass is proud to support a program that reaches our youngest students and their parents, at the forefront of the educational journey.”
Information about the program is included in each kindergarten registration packet; including a voucher for a free Countdown to Kindergarten tee-shirt which can now be redeemed at any Lexington Public Library branch.  This tee-shirt will serve as the student’s entry to any Countdown to Kindergarten activity.
