Lexington, KY - June 11, 2015 - United Way of the Bluegrass and BC Wood Properties have partnered with Blue Grass Airport to host the fourth annual 5K on the Runway. The race will be held at Blue Grass Airport on Saturday, June 20 at 8:30 AM. Race sponsors and community partners include WTVQ-ABC 36, BodyYou, The Lexington Legends, AirMart, Jack Kain Ford, Clark Materials, Noodles & Company, BB&T, Cup of Commonwealth and Bluegrass Greensource.
All are invited to participate in this year’s race on a chip-timed course allowing the public to run or walk on an actual runway and around Lexington’s Blue Grass Airport. Enjoy the thrill of planes taking off and landing on a neighboring runway as you run or walk to help benefit the Bluegrass community through United Way. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to experience the airport from a unique perspective. "We are excited to once again partner with United Way of the Bluegrass to host a 5K race like no other in Central Kentucky," said Eric Frankl, Executive Director of Blue Grass Airport. "It provides runners, walkers and spectators an opportunity to experience the airport in a fun and unique way while enjoying an aviation environment."
All adult participants will receive a free dry-fit performance shirt, and this year there will be music, food, coffee and a small aircraft display at the finish line, as well as entertainment for children provided by The Lexington Legends including inflatables and an appearance by Big L.
The cost for adults is $30.00 and online registration will be open through June 18. Children ages 6-14 may register at a discounted rate of $20.00 and will receive a cotton t-shirt with registration; ages 5 and under may register at no cost.
Race packet pick-up and on-site registration will be available on Friday, June 19 at the Lexington Herald-Leader, 100 Midland Avenue, between 8 AM and 6 PM. Strollers are welcome, but please note that pets, bikes, skates or other vehicles are not permitted. Participants are asked to arrive at the race by 8:00 AM to allow time for parking and check-in. Convenient; free parking will be available onsite.
To access the event, participants should enter by the airport’s Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting Training Center on Versailles Road, just West of Keeneland Race Course -4832 Versailles Road. There will be no access through the airport’s main terminal or parking garage. Directions are available on the race website at 5K On the Runway.
