The United Way of the Bluegrass and NaviGo College and Career Prep Services are pleased to announce a convening of businesses on Thursday, Sept. 17 at 8 a.m. at the United Way of the Bluegrass. This convening will allow business leaders to learn first hand about the NaviGo Scholars Program. This program, presented in partnership between NaviGo College and Career Prep Services the United Way of the Bluegrass, works to engage businesses, community and family members throughout the Bluegrass community in a unique manner.
Unlike any other program available to high school students in central Kentucky, NaviGo Scholars engages businesses in the future of local high school students and responds to the unique workforce needs of individual business demands for a trained and educated workforce to meet the region’s future needs.
NaviGo Scholars is already entering its second year in the Northern Kentucky Region. For the 2015-16 school year, eight sponsor companies — Toyota, Duke Energy, Mazak, Pomeroy, Citi, Heritage Bank, C-Forward and Toyota Boshoku — combed through applications from students hoping to be part of the NaviGo Scholars program. 150 Scholars were ultimately selected.
Sponsors look for students with interests that connect with their work forces. Identifying those students before they ever graduate from high school allows the company leaders to work with students who could potentially fill their future job needs. In turn, students get training and experience they may not have received without the NaviGo Scholars program. NaviGo will also provide a college and career coach for each of the students.
This approach not only helps serve the region’s workforce needs and assists selected students with preparation of needed skills beyond high school, but also results in a positive impact on workforce development, successful transition to college and/or career as well as the Big, Bold Goal of the United Way.
