Lexington, KY – November 11, 2016- United Way of the Bluegrass, in conjunction with the National 9/11 Day of Service, recently completed a special service project in Fayette, Woodford and Scott counties collecting items to benefit troops serving in the 1-320th Field Artillery Unit, 101st Airborne Division, currently based in Iraq.
Throughout the month of September local businesses and participating schools collected books, toiletries, snacks and other donated items to support the project with donations totaling 1,247 pounds. Last month, students from Mary Todd Elementary in Lexington, Southern Elementary in Georgetown and Simmons Elementary in Versailles worked with volunteers from Kentucky American Water to create artwork for each box. United Way employees, along with volunteers from the Lafayette High School football team packaged and shipped over 130 boxes containing books, crossword puzzles, toiletries, packaged food and other items.  Ruggles Sign sponsored the project by providing a contribution to cover the cost of shipping to Iraq.
“Today on Veterans Day, and every day - honoring and celebrating those men and women that serve or have served our country is important to our community and region.  This is further validated by the immense response and collaboration on this special project.  United Way would like to thank our partners and donors for their support of this effort,” said United Way of the Bluegrass President and CEO, Bill Farmer.
All donations have been successfully delivered to the troops currently serving in Iraq.
