Let’s learn more about Jeff in our question and answer session below!

What is your role with the Scott County Trailblazers?

I coach and mentor young students at Elkhorn Crossing, a school that focuses on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). I personally have no engineering background, but I do have experience in developing soft skills from when I managed an office in California. A lot of what these kids do is focused on teamwork, so I help them develop those soft skills that are so important when working together as a team.

What made you realize you had a passion for volunteering in this area?

I’ve always had a passion for helping young people and the elderly, but lately my focus has been on helping young people. I think the reason I like to do that is because I see a need for mentoring and coaching. One reason I particularly like the STEM area is that they are making an effort to reach out to more diverse students. For instance, it’s not very common to see women in STEM careers, but Elkhorn Crossing is trying to change that.

What is your favorite part about volunteering in this role?

Whatever project the students are working on usually takes half the school year. I love seeing how involved the students are from the beginning of the program to its completion.

What about volunteering in this way inspires you?

I just really enjoy working with young people again, especially those that need some mentoring and coaching. Volunteering in this capacity helps make our society better and in that way, I feel like I’m helping my grandson, too.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Because of the pandemic, I’m not able to do a lot of the things I used to like to do like go to the gym. When I was younger, I ran marathons and climbed mountains in California. So I really like to be outside. My wife and I also belong to Southland Church.

Fast questions:

How would you describe yourself?

Conscientious, positive, I love to read, be around children and I try to keep my emotions to myself.

If you could time travel, would you go back in time or to the future? What would you do?

I’d probably go back in time. I’d love to have the opportunity to talk to people I truly admire and learn from them.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

I think it would be cool to be able to fly. I have a 5-year-old grandson and we play superpowers all the time.

What’s your go-to snack food?

Anything with peanut butter.

Thank you for your amazing work with the Scott County Trailblazers and the kids at Elkhorn Crossing, Jeff! We appreciate everything you’re doing to improve our community!
